Two-day water dispute enough to close Namibian tannery

A small tannery in central Namibia had to stop production for two days at the end of June following a dispute over water. The incident brought into focus how vulnerable tanneries can be in areas with difficult access to water resources.

Rehoboth Huide en Velle tannery usually processes between 200 and 300 hides a day, but had to stop production after the state water company, NamWater, halted supply to the town of Rehoboth on June 25 in a dispute over bills that it said the council had not paid. With no alternative access to sufficient supplies of water, the tannery was unable to operate until the dispute ended on June 27.

Schools and other businesses in the town were similarly affected.
