The World Animal Health Organisation (OIE) has confirmed an outbreak of foot and mouth disease (FMD) in a herd of sheep in Israel.

Tests at Israel’s national veterinary laboratory at the Kimron Veterinary Institute on March 21 confirmed the presence of FMD in a herd of sheep kept by Bedouin farmers near the village of Rahat in the Beer-Sheva district.

The authorities in Israel have announced a quarantine for the affected herd and restrictions on animal transportation. They will also carry out a vaccination programme.
