Lighter leather leads to airline contract wins for Muirhead
05/03/2012
Air China and China Eastern airways have specified Andrew Muirhead second-generation Voyager leather for their first-class cabins. The new version of the leather is 30% lighter, while still a full one millimetre in thickness. It is still 100% genuine leather, not reconstituted but has, the tannery claims, greater elasticity than standard leather allowing for more flexible use.
The company sees Voyager leather as “a huge benefit to the aviation industry” because the reduction in weight helps to reduce the amount of energy and fuel used.
Lan Chile, the flag carrier of Chile and one of the largest airlines in Latin America, recently specified Andrew Muirhead leather for its new Boeing Dreamliner 787 aircraft. Due to come into service in the second quarter of 2012, this aircraft will expand services between South America, Washington DC and London.
