EU: new upholstery leather minimum for 2012

14/11/2011

A new EU standard which states that automotive manufacturers selling vehicles with leather interiors within the European Union will only be able to claim it as a full leather interior if it has a minimum of 80% or more leather content. The standard will come into force in 2012 and also includes non-auto leather materials, such as sofas and home furniture.

The new standard says that manufacturers must now make sure that at least 80% of all interior face panels are leather to be called a ‘leather interior or article’. Heavily coated PU leathers and splits used in auto and furniture upholstery must be labelled as ‘bonded leather’ under the guidelines of the new standard.
