Italian tanning machinery manufacturer Cartigliano celebrated its fiftieth anniversary in the town of the same name on September 18. Approximately 1,000 guests visited the Cartigliano factory during an open day to mark the occasion, and 650 people attended a gala dinner that evening.

Special guests of honour included member of the European Parliament Mara Bizzotto, member of the Italian Parliament Manuela Lanzarin, regional education minister, Elena Donazzan, the president of the provincial government of Vicenza, Attilio Schneck and the mayor of the town of Cartigliano, Germano Rachella.

During the dinner, company president, Dr Toni Polato, paid tribute to Cartigliano’s ongoing commitment to research and development and said it was the basis of 50 years of success. He said: “This attitude to innovation led to the development of the first vacuum dryer. We have registered more than 200 international patents and we have revolutionised the delicate phase that brings hides from the wet stage to be ready for finishing.”

He pointed out that “inventiveness and what a company does” are worth more than words, and said this was the reason why his company continues to run what he claimed was the biggest research and development department in its field anywhere in the world, opening it up to tanners every day to allow them to carry out real-life trials.
Ongoing research projects include using biomass to produce energy.

“Satisfaction for us is seeing that twinkle in our clients’ eyes, meaning ‘This is what I was looking for!’. The added value that we can give to the product is our pride and gives us the strength to go on. We try and try again; we sometimes make mistakes, but we always find a way to better ourselves. This is progress.”
