Strong visitor numbers at IILF

IILF 2011, the twenty-sixth India International Leather Fair, closed in Chennai on February 3. Organiser, the India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO), told leatherbiz.com that 21,600 visitors had attended the even during the first two days, while a total of 20,000 attended over all three days of the event in 2010.

“The market is growing, and India is strong,” said Krishan Kumar, ITPO manager.

Asked about a heavy presence, especially in Hall 3, of synthetic material suppliers at the event, ITPO general manager, Dr P.C. Sikroria, said IILF sought to represent “the complete spectrum, the A-Z” of the leather supply chain, including chemicals, machinery and footwear components, as well as finished leather.

He said that because user organisations such as footwear buyers also want to source synthetic materials, ITPO was justified in including suppliers of these substitute materials at IILF. He accepted that the insistence of many of these suppliers on including the word ‘leather’ in their product descriptions and, sometimes, even their company names, was something the exhibition’s organisers should look at.

Grouping all synthetic materials suppliers together in a single, clearly marked part of the exhibition grounds was a possibility for future years, he said.
