Oetzi replica to be exhibited
A replica of Oetzi, the 5300-year old man found in an alpine glacier in 1991, is to be displayed in an exhibition in Hattingen, Germany. The exhibition, titled ‘Oetzi – The Iceman’, will be at Hattingen City Museum from 15 January to 13 March 2011 and will feature the replica, which is on loan from the Neanderthal Museum.
The shoes Oetzi was found wearing are the oldest discovered in Europe, and were made from leather. The soles are made from bearskin which had been cured in a mixture of the bear’s brain matter and fat from its liver. Deer hide was used for the top panels and was mounted on a mesh of braided linden bark. The bindings are made of calf leather. Straw was used for insulation and moss as a lining which functioned like modern socks.
Hattingen City Museum director, Petra Kamburg, said: “For the very first time, we are showing an exhibition with the theme ‘stone age’ – that is something special.”
