Two more years for tannery relocation project

15/11/2010
The relocation of tanneries from the Hazaribagh district of the Bangladesh capital, Dhaka, to a new site at Savar will take another two years to complete, a newly appointed project head has told local media.

Project director Muhammad Mahbubur Rahman, said he could see no way of relocation the tanneries before 2012. He said the new site at Savar was only 60% complete with work on the central effluent treatment plant now in the hands of four Dhaka-based academics. The effluent treatment plant has long been the main point of contention, with the government and tannery owners each attempting to avoid having to pay for its construction.

Consultants from the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) have taken up the role of overseeing technical matters.
