Hazaribagh: minister says tannery shift is imminent

20/09/2010
Bangladesh’s shipping minister, Shahjahan Khan, has said at a public meeting in Dhaka that the government has decided to remove tanneries immediately from the Hazaribagh district of the city as part of initiatives to improve the condition of the Buriganga river, which he described as a lifeline for the city.

The minister said around 6,000 tonnes of toxic liquid waste was flowing into the river every day and insisted that 49% of the total came from the 158 tanneries in Hazaribagh.

The government has been pushing for tanneries to relocate to a new site at Savar since 2003 but a long-running dispute over the funding of a common effluent treatment plant has held progress up.

A deadline for the move to take place by August 28 passed without any movement. Pressure from the government has been building up since then.
