Export growth for Spain's leathergoods

19/03/2009

ASEFMA, the association that represents Spanish leathergoods manufacturers, has reported total export sales for sector of EUR 389.6 million last year. This represents growth of 2% on 2007.

The organisation went on to say that, over the last five years, Spain's leathergoods have increased their export value by an accumulated 40%.

The president of ASEFMA, Félix Bellido, said on announcing the results: "The growth figures of the last few years have been achieved thanks to the capacity of companies to change and adapt to the market situation, combined witht he support of the Spanish Foreign Trade Institute (ICEX)."

The most important market for Spanish leathergoods continues to be France, with goods worth almost EUR 125 million going there, 32% of all exports, and a 7% increase in value compared to 2007.

After France, Portugal, Italy, Mexico, Japan and the UK were the most important export markets.

Imports of leathergoods to Spain were worth EUR 857.9 million last year, with 56.4% coming from China. ASEFMA pointed out, however, that imports of leathergoods appear to be growing more slowly (by 1% in 2008) than exports.
