Luxury group confirms stake in another tannery

Luxury group Chanel has confirmed that it has taken a stake in Conceria Samanta, a Ponte a Egola-based tannery that specialises in printing and stamping leather.

Samanta’s product range includes bovine leather with a wide selection of animal print and reptile effects and it has been a supplier to Chanel for some time. At the end of 2018, Chanel announced it would stop using exotic skins in its leathergoods products; its use of bovine leather from Samanta allows it to maintain in its collections many of the looks that exotic skins offer.

In a statement, Chanel said it would work closely with the leather manufacturer to help it continue to develop its offering, but it said Samanta would continue to supply other customers too. The extent and value of Chanel’s investment in Conceria Samanta have not been made public.

This is Chanel’s fourth investment in its leather supply chain in recent years, following its purchase of a 100% stake in specialist Catalan double-face producer Colomer in 2018 and its acquisition of two French small skins tanneries, Bodin Joyeux in 2013 and Mégisserie Richard in 2016.
