Karma puts Bridge of Weir leather in Shanghai show cars

Californian electric car brand Karma Automotive used leather from Scotland’s Bridge of Weir Leather Company in the interiors of two of its vehicles on display at the 2019 Shanghai Auto Show (April 18-25).

At the event in Shanghai the 2020 Karma Revero GT and the Karma SC1 Vision Concept made their global debuts, with both vehicles featuring leather from Bridge of Weir. The leather manufacturer has called the range of leather available to Karma Automotive customers Karma Soft.

The Revero GT on show in Shanghai featured perforated Karma Soft leather in black throughout the interior. This luxury electric vehicle will go on sale in the second half of 2019. For its part, the Karma SC1 Vision Concept roadster at the show used non-perforated black Karma Soft leather in its cabin.

Bridge of Weir Leather further supported Karma Automotive’s presence in Shanghai by putting leather in 24 different colours on display in a customisation area at the car company’s stand.

Vice-president for design and craftsmanship at Karma Automotive, Paul Houghton, said in the build-up to the Shanghai exhibition: “At Karma Automotive, we carefully select suppliers who can meet our exceptionally high standards, and Bridge of Weir has continuously impressed us during our long-standing relationship. The company’s attention to detail, approach to sustainability, utilisation of the very latest production methods and rich heritage of craftsmanship, means the leather featured in both the new 2020 Karma Revero GT and SC1 Vision Concept is of the absolute highest quality.”

Bridge of Weir’s managing director, Karen Marshall, added: “We are absolutely delighted to be working with Karma Automotive, a brand that is truly innovative and capable of producing some stunning luxury electric cars, as evidenced by the new Revero GT and the SC1 Vision Concept. We are only too pleased to play a role in making these models such stand-out cars.”

She said that a continued commitment to sustainability means Bridge of Weir has “arguably the lowest carbon footprint of any leather maker in the world”. Bridge of Weir is the largest automotive leather supplier in the UK and competes in the top 10 globally. It started by supplying leather for the the Model T Ford in the early twentieth century and the company now supplies the global automotive industry.
