JBS names new chief executive

Packer and tanning group JBS has appointed Gilberto Tomazoni as its new chief executive. The group’s board unanimously elected him at a meeting on December 4. He will take up the appointment with immediate effect.

Mr Tomazoni has a total of 35 years’ experience of the food industry and has worked at JBS since 2013, most recently as its chief operating officer.

“He lives the company’s culture and has a deep knowledge of our business worldwide,” said outgoing chief executive, José Batista Sobrinho, of his successor. “He will lead the company in a new phase of its development.”

Mr Batista founded JBS in 1953 and his initials give the company its name. He came out of retirement during 2017, a year of trouble and turbulence for the group following political and financial scandals, to resume the role of president.

On taking up the appointment, Gilberto Tomazoni promised to pay “relentless attention” to transparency, governance and compliance. He said: “I want JBS to become a global benchmark.”
