Second Clayton Group tannery goes into administration

Administrators FRP Advisory have confirmed to leatherbiz that a second leather manufacturer in the Clayton Leather Group has gone into administration.

Joseph Clayton & Sons Limited of Chesterfield went into administration on September 20 and FRP Advisory informed most of the 25 members of staff almost immediately that they would lose their jobs.

At that time, the administrators said that the three other companies in the Clayton Leather Group would continue to trade, a reference to bridle leather manufacturers Sedgwick & Co and Samuel Sharp, and master leather currier company William Clarke.

However, FRP Advisory has now confirmed that it put Walsall-based Sedgwick & Co into administration on October 4.

Joint-administrator, Emily Ball, said: “We have been working closely with the directors of Clayton Leather Group in recent weeks to explore the strategic options for the group. Unfortunately, despite some serious expressions of interest, it was not possible to achieve a sale of the business and assets and the directors were left with no option but to place J & E Sedgwick & Co Ltd into administration, leading to 14 members of staff being made redundant. The remaining 12 employees have been retained to assist with the orderly wind-down of the company. We are providing support to the affected employees.”

The Clayton Leather Group acquired Sedgwick in 2015, creating what Clayton referred to at the time as the largest vegetable tanning group in the UK.

James and Emmanuel Sedgwick set up the company in Walsall in 1900 to supply the equestrian trade. They were later joined by Richard Farrow, whose grandson, also called Richard Farrow, was the managing director until his retirement at the time of the acquisition by the Clayton Leather Group.
