France prepares to train a new generation of leather artisans

A new leather and luxury products manufacturing training centre will open at Thiviers in the Dordogne in France in mid-September.

The centre has been under construction for the last three years, but the project is now complete and regional president, Alain Rousset, will take part in a formal opening ceremony next month.

After carrying out a detailed study, the authorities in this part of France calculated that there are at least 100 companies within a 50-kilometre radius of Thiviers that are involved in making leather or luxury leathergoods. These include luxury brand Hermès and high-end footwear manufacturer Repetto, both of whom have production sites in the area.

In all, the local authorities will aim to train almost 300 new artisan leathergoods workers so that these companies can continue to grow and find the skills they need among the working people of the surrounding area.

The well equipped training centre covers an area of around 400 square-metres and is the result of an investment of €1 million, with 50% of that money spent on machinery. An additional space of 100 square-metres will be devoted to a showroom to display products the region’s new leathergoods artisans have made during training.
