A collection of items that belonged to the leader of India's independence movement, Mahatma Gandhi, including a pair of leather sandals, has sold $1.8m at an auction in New York.
The company behind the sale, Antiquorum, said the buyer was Vijay Mallya, chairman of United Breweries Group and Kingfisher Airlines. Mr Mallya is said to have offered the items to the Indian government to go on public display.
The sale of the items provoked an angry reaction in India when it was first announced at the start of March.
