China's five advantages
05/03/2009
Xu Yong, vice-president of China's National Light Industry Council has paid an official visit to companies in the leather sector in Quanzhou, Fujian province.
He told local footwear manufacturers that they had contributed greatly to China's status as the largest producer of leather in the world.
The government in China calculates that 50% of all leather in the world is produced in Chinese tanneries. Although local footwear firms are suffering because of the slowdown in the global economy, Mr Xu said there were five reasons for optimism.
First, he said, the central government will continue to show a high level of interest in all issues affecting the leather industry and was devoting part of its overall stimulus package to the sector.
Secondly, he said small and medium-sized business would receive special help to boost consumption and employment. He also pointed to relief in export taxes for some leather products.
Another of the points Mr Xu made was to claim that production and export levels are still growing and would continue to grow after the developments of the last 30 had allowed China to set up "a complete industrial chain" that would be able to withstand the current difficulties in the global market.
While comments on Quanzhou shoemaking sector, Xu Yong said Quanzhou is where the shoemaking industry growing fast and grew to a sports shoes processing cluster, it created a miracle in China private leather industry.
