Pakistan’s leather exports fall

Figures from Pakistan’s statistics bureau show that the country’s leather exports fell 0.8% in January to $70.3 million from $70.9 million in December 2008. Compared with January 2008 figures, exports fell 14.5% from $82.2 million.

The country exported finished leather worth $19.4 million, leathergoods worth $41.6 million and footwear worth $10.4 million compared with $21.1 million, $41 million and $8.8 million, respectively, in the previous month. Finished leather exports fell 7.8% compared with December 2008, but leathergoods exports rose 1.5% and footwear exports were up 19%.

Total leather exports for the period July 2008 to January 2009 fell 12.5% to $610.4 million from $686.6 million in the same period in the previous year.

The breakdown showed that during the seven-month period, the country exported 11.3 million m² of finished leather at $184.7 million compared with 13.6 m² at $231 million in the July 2007 to January 2008 period, a 16.6% decline in volume and a 20% decline value.

The country exported leathergoods worth $358.1 million (including leather garments worth $263 million, leather gloves worth $88.1 million and other leathergoods worth $7 million) down 9.9% compared with $397.2 million in the corresponding period last year. The country also exported 7.5 million pairs of shoes worth $67.7 million (including leather footwear worth $55.3 million) compared with 6.9 million pairs at $58.4 million in prior-year period, showing a 15.9% rise.
