Chinese leather exports rise
According to statistics from the China Leather Industry Association (CLIA), the country’s leather exports rose 10.8% in 2008 to $28.2 billion compared with $25.5 billion in 2007.
The breakdown showed that China exported travel goods worth $13.9 billion compared with $10.8 billion in 2007, a rise of 28.9%. Leather shoe exports rose 2.6% to $9.8 billion from $9.561 billion.
Leather glove exports rose 1% to $832.4 million from $840.9 million; footwear component exports were up 37% to $1.6 billion from $1.2 billion; and raw hide exports rise 13.8% to $2 million from $1.7 million.
However, leather garment exports fell 23.1% to $992.8 million from $1.3 billion; fur garments fell 17.3% to $252.9 million from $305.8 million; and skins exports dropped 66.2% to $397.2 million from $1.2 in 2007.
China imported leathergoods worth $7.1 billion in 2008, up 0.9% from $7 billion in same period last year.
