Mixed figures for Pakistani leather sector

New data for the Pakistani leather sector shows a slight decline (-0.6%) in finished leather production in December. Production totalled 1.66 million m² compared with 1.67 million m² in December 2007.

The Federal Bureau of Statistics also reported that footwear production fell 12.8% in December. The country produced 1.4 million pairs of footwear in December 2008 compared to 1.6 million pairs in December 2007. However, sole leather production rose 28.6% to nine tons compared with seven tons in December 2007.

Total leather production for the period July to December 2008 totalled 9.9 million m² compared with 10.3 million m² in the prior-year period, a decline of 3.6%. Sole leather production fell 3.8% to 51 tons from 53 tons in the 2007-08 period. However, shoe production rose 17.4% to 14 million pairs from 12 million pairs during the six-month period.
