The China Leather Industry Association (CLIA) has joined forces with China's finance and trade union for textiles and tobacco to recognise tanneries that are working to decrease their environmental footprints.

According to the CLIA, the global economic downturn has caused many tanneries to re-evaluate the way they operate. It claims that many are looking into technical innovations that would reduce pollution as well as saving energy.

The association’s innovation awards are designed to reward companies that manage to do this.

The first seven awards went to: Hebei Dongming Industrial Group; Jiaozuo Longfeng Leather And Fur Co.; ISA Industrial Ltd; Zhejiang Tongtianxing Group; Zhonghui Leather And Fur Co.; and Xingye Leather and Yantai Tannery. The CLIA says these companies have implemented innovations that have contributed significant economic and environmental benefits and that this will play a pivotal role in terms of energy saving and pollution reduction.
