Vietnamese leather exports rise 20%

According to Vietnam’s General Statistics Office, the country’s total exports amounted to $62.9 billion in 2008 compared with $48.4 billion in 2007, a 30% increase.

Exports of leathergoods and leather footwear totalled $5.5 billion in 2008 compared with $4.6 billion in 2007, a rise of 20.1%.

The breakdown showed that Vietnam exported leather footwear worth $4.7 billion and leather products $825 million in 2008 compared with $4 billion and $635 million in 2007, a rise of 18.5% and 30%, respectively.

In December, Vietnamese footwear exports totalled $450 million compared with $390 million in December 2007. Leathergoods exports rose to $80 million from $65 million.
