TFL launches Sellatan PA

05/02/2009

Demand for reduced salt in tannery waste water has grown steadily in various parts of the tanning world. In response, TFL has worked with several major tanneries in Italy’s Arzignano region and has consequently developed Sellatan PA as part of a complete pickling, tanning and basifying system that substantially reduces the amount of salt used in pickling.

During wet blue production, the system also enables tanners to use less chrome tanning and basifying agents without changing the character of the final article. Chloride use is approximately halved, while sulphate use is down by around one-third. It is also possible to reduce the salt used in the pickle of chrome-free, aldehyde tanning by 50%.

Sellatan PA is based on modified polysulphonic acids and is a modified version of the Sellatan P. The new version also has some tanning effect and therefore allows pickling to be undertaken at a few degrees higher than normal. It provides a faster and more uniform penetration of subsequently applied tanning agents and noticeably improves tensile strength. Furthermore, it contains no potentially harmful substances.
