Positive news of sole leather and shoes

The Pakistani authorities have released new data for the leather sector, which shows a mixed picture of production. They reported a decline of 5.4% in the production of finished leather during the month of November 2008, to 1.6 million square-metres.
According to data released by the Federal Bureau of Statistics, footwear production recorded a growth of 14.1%. The country produced 2.1 million pairs of footwear in November 2008, compared to 1.9 million pairs in November 2007.
However, the production of sole leather showed an upward trend of 25% to 10 tonnes in November 2008, compared to 8 tonnes in November 2007.
Pakistan's total production of leather for the first five months of the present fiscal year (July-November 2008) stood at 8.2 million square-metres, compared to 8.6 million in the same period last financial year, a drop of just over 4%.
However, the production of footwear remained higher at 12.6 million pairs for the five-month period, growth of 22.2%.
