Industry up 39% in four years in UAE

The industrial sector in the United Arab Emirates increased substantially between 2004 and last year, according to the department of industrial development’s 2008 report.

The number of industrial enterprises rose from 3,036 in 2004 to 4,219 last year, an increase of 39%. The 2008 figure represents a 9.5% increase on the previous year’s total of 3,852.

In the leather, textile and apparel sector, there were 287 companies active at the end of 2008, accounting for around 5.6% of all industrial companies. The report said these companies had investments of almost $270 million, an increase of $6 million, compared to 2007. They have a combined total of 31,823 workers, with an average of 115 employees per institution.
