Uruguay: lamb export record

23/01/2009

In the course of 2008, Uruguay exported $71 million worth of lamb, a record amount for the South American country. And 2009 is starting well regarding lamb exports, particularly to Mexico where there is the possibility of a preferential tariff of around 7% on imports of the meat from Uruguay from mid-year onwards. Mexico has to import 55% of the lamb it consumes.

In the whole of 2008, 42 containers of lamb were shipped to Mexico and another six have left Uruguay for Mexico since the start of this year, according to information provided by Mexican auditors inspecting shipments in Uruguay.

At the same time, negotiations with Canada and the US are well advanced with regards to sanitary documentation.

In 2008, most of the Uruguayan lamb exported went to Russia, from where traders were able to secure the best price at the time.
