Michelle Obama gloves in demand

22/01/2009

Hours after the inauguration of President Barack Obama on January 20, the website of the fashion retailer that had supplied sage-green leather gloves to his wife, Michelle, for the occasion, had crashed because of the number of people who wanted to buy a similar pair.

Jenna Lyons of the retailer in question, New York-based J. Crew, told the New York Times afterwards: “It’s an incredible validation to have the First Family like what you’re doing.”

By Wednesday morning, the whole women’s section of the site had crashed. Later in the day, the entire site was down.

J.Crew has since adapted its homepage to explain in more detail what it did to dress the Obamas up for the big day, including coats for the president's daughters. The company says that it it's always inspired by people who can "effortlessly mix designer pieces with everyday pieces", adding that this is the central idea that captures perfectly the J. Crew aesthetic.
