Ethiopia’s beef and leather export earnings are expected to increase by over $1 billion, to a total of $2.6 billion for the fiscal year 2008-2009, agriculture sector media have reported.

Leather exports are expected to make up $1.46 billion of this total, and this could increase further in future years as plans to develop more tanneries in the country click into place.

Ethiopia has the third-largest cattle herd in Africa, with 23 million head, and the government is enthusiastic about using this resource to boost export figures through both leather and beef.
