Bangladesh: new government supports treatment plant
20/01/2009
A delegation of Bangladesh’s leather industry met the country's industry minister, Dilip Barua, and discussed the relocation of tanneries from the Hazaribagh district of the capital, Dhaka, to a proposed newly constructed leather industry zone in the Savar district.
The project, which requires government funding, has been on hold since the December 2007 general elections were indefinitely postponed. However, Bangladesh held successful elections on December 29, and the hope is that the new government will be able to inject some new momentum into the Savar leather initiative.
According to local media, the Bangladesh Finished Leather and Leather Goods and Footwear Exporters Association (BFLLFEA) and the Bangladesh Tanners Association (BTA) have demanded immediate setting up of a central treatment plant (CTP) at the proposed site in Savar. They said that the Bangladesh leather industry would lose international business unless it were able to offer finished leather that had less impact on the environment.
The minister pledged support from the government to build the CTP.
