Fairy tale for Spanish tanners
15/01/2009
A group of Spanish tanners took part in an unusual fashion event in December.
Working with designer Romain Kremer, seven tanners contributed material and support to an exhibition in Antwerp called 'The Beast and No Beauty', using a selection of black, full-grain garment leathers to tell a surrealist version of the traditional fairy tale.
The president of the Spanish Tanners' Confederation (CEC-FECUR), Josep Ballbè, said the event had given member companies the chance to present leather produced in a positive light thanks to the "high level of creativity" the Paris-based designer had applied to the project.
He said it was a distinctive way of conveying the added value high-quality leatehr can bring to the work of designers and "the close bonds that exist between the world of fashion and the tanning industry".
The tanneries that took part were Colomer y Munmany, Curtidos Codina, Genís Antel, Incusa, La Doma, Manufacturas Artísticas del Cuero and Serpelsa Furs.
CEC-FECUR says designers in other parts of the world, including Japan, are interested in taking part in similar events in the future.
