Support in Guanajuato
13/01/2009
The governor of the Mexican state of Guanajuato, Juan Manuel Oliva Ramírez, has said that small and medium-sized leather sector businesses there will have a pot of financial assistance available to them to help them through the economic slowdown.
Mr Oliva said a sum of more than $100 million will be available to provide assistance to tanners and footwear manufacturers in Guanajuato, the country’s main centre for leather and footwear production.
He explained that the programme of aid has been agreed with local representatives and said he supported their calls for tariffs on footwear imports from Asia.
“We want to offer strong support to the leather and footwear sector,” the governor said. “We've been in discussion with industry representatives and these credit lines that we have now set up are the outcome.”
