Overall growth for Bangladesh leather exports

Bangladesh’s leather exports grew in the period from July to November 2008, despite a fall in exports of finished leather.
According to the country’s Export Promotion Bureau (EPB), Bangladesh’s total leather sector exports rose by 3.13% to $183.3 million in the period in question, the first five months of the fiscal year, compared to the same months the year before.
The breakdown shows that Bangladesh exported leather footwear worth $84.8 million, up from $61.1 million, showing growth of 38.8%. Exports of handbags grew by 45.3% to $6.48 million.
However, on negative note, finished leather exports fell by 17.9% to $92.04 million in July-November 2008 compared to $112.2 million in the corresponding period a year earlier.
