Bertin appoints new president

13/01/2009

Fernando Antônio Bertin, one of the founders of Brazilian meat and tanning group Bertin S.A., who was a member of the company's managing council, has been appointed director-president after the premature dismissal just six months after taking over the position
of João Pinheiro Nogueira Batista.

While he was head of Bertin, Mr Nogueira Batista managed to consolidate the structure of the management model that included a managing council and a governance system, which resulted in the approval of the company’s strategic planning for the next five years.

The change took place at a time when the beef sector is going through difficulties, with a shortage of cattle for slaughter and pressure in export markets. These problems led Bertin to close down an abattoir in Araguaína, Tocantins, in December. The company also reduced its leather production because of a lower international demand.

Bertin's plan to start operating in the finance sector and create a bank has been postponed.
