Meat holds steady, but soya reigns supreme

Figures released by the authorities in Argentina and Brazil show that exports of meat from the two South American countries performed well in 2008, although soya beans made a substantially larger contribution to both economies.
In Argentina, government agency Senasa confirmed that meat exports in the first 11 months of last year were 562,710 tonnes, which brought in export revenues of $2.01 billion, with the December figures not year available.
Across the border in Brazil, the ministry for agriculture and livestock said meat exports there for the full year reached 5.91 million tonnes, a slight increase on the 2007 total of 5.87 million tonnes. In value terms, however, the 2008 exports showed a substantial rise compared to the year before: $14.5 billion, up from $11.3 billion.
In both countries, earnings from exports of soya beans and related products were worth much more. In Brazil, the soya bean export sector was worth $17.9 billion last year. In Argentina, January-November soya exports were worth $11.9 billion.
