Thai minister revises export target upward

The Thai commerce ministry has revised its 2009 export-growth target to 3%, aiming for a total of $184.7 billion for the year. It previously said it was aiming for growth of between 0 and 5%.
Commerce minister, Pornthiva Nakasai, said the ministry would ask for around $90 million in special funding from the a supplementary budget to promote exports through marketing activities and roadshows. It will seek three times that amount to stimulate domestic spending.
The five measures will focus on export promotion, business liquidity, marketing, image and advertising and supplementary measures to boost orders.
Exports last year grew by an estimated 18% to $179.6 billion, accounting for 70% of gross domestic product.
Specific to the leathergoods industry, the revised target is for 5% growth in exports, up from 2%.
