Right time for leather G4

15/12/2008

According to the Centre for the Brazilian Tanning Industry (CICB), now is the right time for the formation of a Leather Industry G4. The first stage in its development took place at the recent Brazilian Competitiveness Forum at which delegates from the world's main leather producing countries recently met.

The G4 will bring together the four countries that account for 60% of the global leather production: China, Brazil, India and the USA. According to the CICB, the three emerging nations are likely to occupy leading positions in the world's economy by the middle of the century.

The grouping of these countries may help to offer new standards for leather negotiations as well as exploring new uses for leather, especially in the production of luxury goods.

Managing director of the CICB and coordinator of the CICB-ApexBrasil Project, Professor Hélio Mendes, believes now is a good time to take this initiative forward. “Now is the time to think big and act in a planned manner,” he said.
