Indian leather exports rise across all sectors

Indian leather export growth slowed to 13.8% in the first seven months of 2008-09 compared with the 18.2% reported between April 2007 and October 2008.

According to customs data, leather and leathergoods exports were $2.2 billion during the period compared with $1.9 billion in the corresponding period last year. Exports were up 21.8% in rupee terms to Rs94.9 billion compared with Rs77.9 billion.

Growth was seen across all product categories, although growth in saddlery and harness exports and footwear exports has declined slightly.

The EU countries, the US and Hong Kong continue to be the main export destination for Indian leather and leathergoods exports.
