Leather clothing sales suffer

12/12/2008

The authorities in the Chinese province of Jiangsu have reported a difficult end to the year for manufacturers and exporters of clothing there.

Clothing exports going through the province's main port at Nanjing from January to November have shown a healthy increase on the same period last year, with growth of 17.9% and a total value of just over $2 billion. However, customs authorities have made it clear that this is in spite of "negative growth" for each of the last four months to feature in the calculation: August, September, October and November 2008.

The fall in value of apparel exports in November alone was 9.3% as trade with the EU, the United States and Japan suffers.

Perhaps of even greater concern is that sales in the domestic market also dropped dramatically in October, with a fall in the value of leather clothing sales of 35.7% compared to October last year.
