New tanning material at Lanxess

Specialty chemicals group Lanxess AG has developed a new, sulfone-based synthetic tanning material that is said to have outstanding fastness.

The new product, Tanigan VR, is designed to combine the advantages of modern chemical technology with those of a vegetable tanning material. It also eliminates the problems often caused by the inherent colour of vegetable tanning materials.

“Tanigan VR represents a new generation of synthetic organic tanning materials,” explains Chris Tysoe, director product development & application – wet end in the leather business unit. “It is the result of years of experience in the use of syntans for tanning and retanning cattle hides in particular, but also sheep and goat skins.”

Unlike vegetable tanning materials, Tanigan VR has outstanding heat resistance and lightfastness and is almost coluorless. It also has excellent filling and embossing properties.
