Indian leather exports up

The Indian leather sector performed well in the April to September period, according to customs data.

Figures show that exports of leather and leathergoods totalled $2 billion between April and September compared with $1.7 billion in the corresponding period last year, representing an 18.22% rise. In rupee terms, exports totalled Rs83.9 billion compared with Rs67.9 billion, a 23.5% rise.

All product categories recorded positive growth; however export growth in the saddlery and harness and leather footwear categories fell slightly.

The EU countries, the USA and Hong Kong continue to be the major export destinations for Indian leather and leathergoods.
