PLGMEA demands relief

08/12/2008

The Pakistan Leather Garment Manufacturers & Exporters Association (PLGMEA) has held talks with Syed Mohibullah Shah, chief executive of the trade development authority of Pakistan (TDAP) to discuss a series of outstanding issues.

PLGMEA chairman, Fawad Ijaz Khan, said that some subsidy claims from leather garment exporters are still pending after more than three years; he requested that the TDAP grant a 50% freight subsidy on leather garment exports.

Mr Fawad said participation of Pakistani leather garment exporters at international exhibitions was decreasing drastically because of increasing costs and a poor exchange rate. He said his members would be able to use the subsidy to take part in exhibitions such as CPD in
Düsseldorf in February.

Mr Fawad also said there was an acute shortage of skilled workers in leather garment factories and that the National Institute of Leather Technology (NILT), established by the government to train workers for the sector, is not able to produce enough workers to serve this industry.

Mr Mohibullah Shah assured the PLGMEA that his organisation would provide assistance in increasing exports and resolving its problems.
