Smithfield Foods, the largest producer of hogs in the US, has reported lower income during the second quarter compared with the second quarter of 2007.

Net income during the second quarter was $4.2 million compared with $17.4 million during the same quarter last year.

However, sales for the quarter were 3.1 billion compared with $2.7 billion a year ago, and sales for the first half of the year totalled $6.3 billion compared with $5.4 billion.
