Drought kills hundreds of cattle
Uruguay is going through one of the worst dry spells in its history. In El Tala, Soriano, cattle are starving to death because of a lack of fresh vegetation and the land reportedly looks like a desert. Desperate farm owners in the region have invited the relevant authorities to visit the fields to see the situation for themselves.
An emergency committee in San José has declared a state of emergency and says the region is on maximum alert. Meanwhile, breeders are asking people to minimise water and fodder usage and to be alert to field fires. The authorities have registered breeders as having an urgent need for water, both for human and animal consumption.
There are no official figures to corroborate the damage, but it is expected to be extensive. A similar drought is also affecting Argentina.
