Indian minister of state for commerce, Jairam Ramesh recently announced an Rs1.6 billion ($32 million) package to boost the local leather and shoe sector. A waiver on shoes costing up to Rs300 has also been introduced.

The new package will pay for a Rs600 million leather park, a Rs200 million footwear design development centre, a Rs100 million design studio, a testing laboratory and a permanent exhibition ground, which will be developed with an investment of Rs500-600 million.

Estimates suggest that more than 200,000 people are employed by the leather and footwear industry in
Agra. Exports from the region account for a large chunk of the country’s total leather and footwear exports.
