Chile launches first own goat breed

27/11/2008

Livestock breeders in Chile have developed a new breed of goat.

The new goat variety, the Lonquimay, has been created to satisfy the demand for differentiated meat products with origin and quality seals by specialty markets and gourmets and was recently introduced to the market in Temuco by the Sheep-Goat Territorial Innovation Programme of La Araucanía (INNOVICAR).

The new breed has adapted well to a region that is covered by snow and has scarce vegetation for most of the year. The animals are also breeding well and producing tender meat.

Another important feature of these goats is the peculiar type and colour of their skins and hair, meaning that they should also provide an interesting new option for tanners in the goat leather market.
