More good news for Ethiopia
24/11/2008
Following news of leathergoods from Ethiopian brands making an impact on the international market (see leatherbiz.com November 21), the government in the African country has now said that leather is among a select group of products that have pushed export earnings to record levels.
Ethiopia’s export earnings shot up by 25% last year to hit $1.5 billion, up from $1.2 billion last year, and prime minister, Meles Zenawi, has launched a plan to accelerate exports.
Leather, leathergoods, coffee, oil seeds and cut flowers together account for more than 80% of the country’s export earnings, trade and industry minister, Girma Birru, said.
Mr Zenawi said the government would help manufacturers keep quality and productivity levels high and would apply for Ethiopia to become a member of the World Trade Organisation.
