Picture turns gloomy in Pakistan
24/11/2008
During the month of October 2008, Pakistan’s leather sector exports declined by 31.98% to $65.4 million from $96.168 million in September 2008, and by 22.3% if compared to October 2007 ($84.2 million), according to data released by the Federal Bureau of Statistics.
The negative trend is being attributed to the fall in exports of leather garments and footwear.
The breakdown showed that during the July–October 2008 period, the country exported 6.7 million square-metres of tanned leather with a value of $112.7 million compared to 7.9 million square-metres worth $ 131.1 million in July–October last year, a decline of 15.2% in volume and of 14.08% in value.
