Brazilian meat and tanning group Bertin is launching operations in Europe. Through Italian distribution company Bertin&Merlo (B&M), Bertin Alimentos has acquired 50% of Riggamonti, Italy's largest producer of traditional local gastronomical speciality bresaola, which is produced from prime beef cuts. Riggamonti holds 40% of the bresaola market and turned over 130 million euros in 2007.

“The transaction has been done following the company's strategy of adding value to its products,” João Nogueira Batista, managing-president of Bertin, has said. Mr Batista has informed that B&M paid 17 million euros for 50% of Riggamonti.

According to Claudio Merlo, partner at B&M, before European restrictions to Brazilian beef, 90% of the raw material used in the production of bresaola came from Brazil. At the moment, it is down to 10% but it is expected to grow in future.

Bertin already operates abattoirs in Uruguay and Paraguay and a tannery in China.
