Sole leather down, but footwear production surges

The latest data on Pakistan's leather sector shows a mixed picture. It reported a decline of 4.51% in production of leather during the month of September to 1.6 million square-metres compared to 1.7 million in September 2007.
The production of sole leather also declined by 20%; 8 tonnes in September 2008 compared to 10 tonnes in September 2007.
But, according to data released by the Federal Bureau of Statistics, the production of footwear recorded a growth of 25.3%. The country produced 2.9 million pairs of footwear in September 2008, compared to 2.3 million pairs in September 2007.
However, on a commulative basis, Pakistan's total production of leather for July-September stood at 5.1 million square-metres, a decrease of 1.58% on the same period last year.
The production of footwear over the quarter stood at 8.4 million pairs, up from 6.7 million pairs, which shows growth of 26.6%.
