More job-losses feared

Union leaders in Argentina have said they fear further job losses in the tanning sector to add to the 1,000 posts that have already gone as a result of problems in the global economy (leatherbiz.com November 3, 2008).
In advance of a meeting on November 13 with the country's labour minister, Carlos Tomada, leatherworkers' union Fatica issued a joint-statement with its counterpart in the meat-packing sector. The two organisations said the government should act to make sure no other job-losses occur. "We will use the meeting to present our concerns over the wave of redundancies that has taken place in our sector as a result of the slowing down of the global leather industry," said Fatica official Walter Correa before the meeting.
